Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is located in county of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, province of Bavaria, in southern Germany.

 

The town is situated at the northern end of the European Alps near the borders of Austria & Switzerland. The town has approximately 30,000 inhabitants.

 

Like Aspen, Garmisch is a mountain town with a winter ski area. Visitors come from Germany and around Europe.

In 1936, Garmisch hosted the 6th Olympic Winter Games. 

 

In 1978 it hosted the the Alpine Ski Championships, which it will host again in 2011.

 

Garmisch is applying with Munich for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, and in the past has hosted world championships in curling and whitewater kayaking and canoeing.

 

The International 4 Hill Ski Jumping Tournament has also stopped in Garmisch every January for the past 50 years.
