Motor Vehicle: Selling a Vehicle
When selling your vehicle the following documents are required:
- Title: In the seller's section of
the title, sign and print your name exactly as it appears on the title.
If the title has more than one owner, all owners must sign. If the
title has a place for a notary, the title must be notarized. Have the
buyer(s) enter his/her (their) name(s) on the "buyer" portion of the
title, exactly as they wish to hold title.
- Odometer disclosure: A completed odometer disclosure is required when the vehicle is less than 10 years old. The disclosure must be signed by both the seller and the buyer. Most titles have a section on the back for odometer disclosure.
- Bill of sale: A bill of sale must
show the buyer's name(s), purchase price, vehicle identification number
(VIN), year and make of the vehicle. The seller(s) and buyer(s) must
sign this form. Bill of Sale forms are available in our office or you
can download the Bill of Sale in PDF format.
In Colorado,
license plates
remain with the seller, not the vehicle. The new buyer(s) must go to
the county motor vehicle office, in the county in which they live, to
transfer title and obtain new plates and registration.
