Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was added to various products in the past in order to improve their strength and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. Breathing high levels of asbestos may result in lung cancer or other diseases.
Elevated levels of asbestos may occur in buildings where asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed. Until the 1970s, many types of building products and insulation materials used in home construction contained asbestos. EPA's publication,
"Asbestos in Your Home", can help you identify potential problems in your residence.
Under Colorado law, asbestos removal and abatement is required in connection with certain construction projects, including demolitions. A state permit may also be required. It is the responsibility of individuals and entities engaged in construction projects in Pitkin County to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's
Regulation No. 8, Part B, Asbestos Control and to comply with State law in connection with building renovations and demolitions.
