JANUARY IS RADON ACTION MONTH
Did you know that radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)? Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 20,000 lung cancer deaths every year.
Throughout January, City of Aspen residents are eligible to receive a free radon test kit from the Environmental Health Department, until supplies run out. For your free kit, drop by the second floor of Aspen City Hall at 130 S. Galena St. between 9 and 5, or call 970-920-5039 for more information.
Radon is a radioactive gas found in nature, and has no color, odor, or taste. It comes from the decay of uranium atoms. Buildings capture radon leaking up from the ground on which they are built. In Colorado, between 1/3 and 1/2 of the homes have radon levels in excess of the EPA recommended action level of 4 picocuries (pCi) of radon per liter of air.
Testing for Radon
