Play at Home Ideas

 

Play dough

1c. salt, 1 c. flour, 2 c. water with food coloring, 2 Tbl. oil, 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar

large saucepan, Cookie cutters and rolling pin, airtight container for storage

Mix ingredients together in the saucepan, heat and stir, when it forms a solid lump, dump it out and knead it to cool. Dough can be stored in the refrigerator in the airtight container.

 

Recipes

 

Kale Chips

kale leaves

olive oil

sea salt

Wash and dry kale, remove the stem and rip into bite-size pieces. massage sea salt into the leaves or have your kids paint it on. Sprinkle with sea salt and bake on a tray - not touching at 350 for 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don't burn. Cool and eat!

 

Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cinnamon Frosting

1 1/2 c sugar

3/4 c butter

3 eggs

1 15 oz can pumpkin

1 t vanilla

2 1/2 c whole wheat pastry flour

2 t cinnamon

1 t ginger

1 t baking powder

 3/4 t salt

1/2 t allspice

1/2 t baking soda

1 c buttermilk (can add 1 t vinagar to 1 c regular milk if you don't have buttermilk)

Frosting

8 oz cream cheese

1/2 c butter

3 c powdered sugar

2 t cinnamon

1 t vanilla

colored sugar opt.

Bake at 350 in lined muffin pans, filed about 2/3 full, bake 20-25 minutes. When cool, decorate. Cupcakes can be refrigerated, covered for up to 3 days.

 

Caramel Apple dip

8 oz package cream cheese

1/2 cup brown sugar, honey, or caramel topping

1/2 t vanilla

Mix it up, serve with sliced apples

 

Spinach Balls

1/4 c butter, melted

1 box frozen spinach - thawed, and well drained

1 c bread crumbs

1/2 c parmesan cheese

3 eggs

salt-pepper

opt - minced onion and garlic

Mix all, refrigerate until a bit set. Form into small balls and bake at 350 for 10 minutes or browned around the edges.

 

Zuchini Grilled Cheese :

Zuchini (washed, doesn't have to be peeled)

Monterey Jack cheese

Olive oil

Bread crumbs

2 eggs

Slice zuchini in diagonal 1/4 inch or thinner rounds

Steam slices in 1/4 c water for 5 minutes

Layer zuchini with slices of jack cheese to make "sandwiches"

Dip in beaten egg, then in bread crumbs

Grill in skillet on medium in a small amount of olive oil until the cheese is melted and zuchini is crisp and golden. Serve with ranch dip

 

BLT rollups:

1 flour tortilla

2 oz cream cheese

2 T mayo

small amount chopped tomatoes, crumbled bacon, torn up lettuce

Mix the cream cheese and mayo, spread on the tortilla, top with other ingredients, roll up and cut into 7 or 8 "snails".

Have your child help by spreading, crumbling, tearing, rolling and of course eating! You can vary the ingredients depending on what you have on hand, what your child likes.

Think about pesto with turkey and cheese, or with tomatoes and mozzarella, or peanut butter thinned with yogurt, topped with bananas! Yum.
