High Altitude Heron Watching

Join Roaring Fork Conservancy and Aspen Parks for an evening of heron watching above 8,000 feet! One of the highest known colonies of nesting great blue herons in Colorado call Northstar Open Space home. We’ll view the herons up-close with spotting scopes and binoculars. Please bring your own binoculars or a spotting scope if you have them.

Birding Maroon Creek Wetlands

Join Roaring Fork Audubon and Roaring Fork Conservancy for a brisk morning of birding at the Maroon Creek Wetlands. The Maroon Creek Wetlands are temporary home to dozens of migratory birds during the early summer. Come a check some birds off your life list and how this constructed wetland benefits wildlife and people. Bring your binoculars (we’ll have a few pairs to loan). Appropriate for ages 12 years and older.

Meadowlands Family Hike

Discover one of Aspen’s hidden secrets, nestled below the Aspen Meadows along the Roaring Fork River and Castle Creek. Bring your family for an approximately one mile hike and fun hands-on exploration of this healthy riparian ecosystem. Also, we’ll hike to the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Castle Creek, a part of the property closed to the public. Appropriate for kids of all ages and their parents.

Mining Water: History of Aspen’s Mining and Water Tour

Join Roaring Fork Conservancy, City of Aspen Open Space Program, and Aspen Historical Society for a historical look at mining and its effects on our local rivers. The program will include an introduction at the Holden/Marolt Mining Museum and a walking tour of Lixiviation Works ruins along Castle Creek. Discover how mining changed the health of our rivers and what currently threatens the health of our rivers.
