ABC TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Rollerblade)
Surface: Paved
Length: 2.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy
This concrete trail extends from Aspen to the Aspen Business Center and can be used as part of a loop using the Rio Grande and Stein Bridge Trails.

 

AJAX TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 1.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
A simple hike that crosses the front side of Aspen Mountain, but is more challenging for mountain biking. This single track provides scenic views of Aspen.

 

ASPEN MOUNTAIN- Summer Road
(Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 4.9 miles
Difficulty: Hard
This dirt road winds up the face of Aspen Mountain and provides nice views of Aspen and the surrounding valleys. Respect all users.

 

DIFFICULT TRAIL (Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 4.5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This is an enjoyable day hike through a variety of forest environments found along the Difficult Creek Drainage. Difficult Trail is within the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. Please educate yourself about Wilderness ethics and rules by contacting the US Forest Service at 970-925-3445.

 

EAST OF ASPEN TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 3.1 miles
Difficulty: Easy
One of Aspen's most gradual and scenic trails. This trail parallels the Roaring Fork River Southeast of Aspen for over 3 miles. There is an interpretive wildlife-viewing stand along this trail at the North Star Nature Preserve.

 

GOVERNMENT TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This single-track trail winds across two ski areas, through aspen and fir forests, and is one of the more challenging trails in the upper valley.

 

HUNTER CREEK TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 1.5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
The very popular trail accessing US Forest Service land starts a short distance from downtown Aspen. The trail parallels Hunter Creek and has several bridges that cross scenic short hikes in the area. The grade is steep as the first mile of the trail ascends more than 700 feet in elevation. There is also a public parking area and trailhead farther up Red Mountain off Hunter Creek Drive.

 

LANI WHITE TRAIL (Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 0.2 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This trail provides an alternative route to The Hunter Creek Trail from the Centennial and Smuggler area. This is a short pleasant trail along the Salvation Ditch that will lead you to Hunter Creek Trail just above the third bridge allowing for a nice loop walk back down the Hunter Creek Trail.

 

OLD STAGE TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Rollerblade)
Surface:  Paved
Length:  0.8 miles
Difficulty:  Easy
This trail connects the new Burlingame Housing complex to the existing ABC Trail (Aspen Business Center trail).

 

OWL CREEK TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Rollerblade, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 4.4 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This trail connects Aspen to Snowmass Village starting from Buttermilk Ski Area and crossing the Owl Creek drainage to connect to the Snowmass trail system at the Owl Creek/Brush Creek divide. The trail is moderately difficult because substantial elevation is gained to cross the divide to Brush Creek. It is a scenic trail that passes through beautiful aspen groves and meadows.

 

RED BUTTE TRAIL (Hike)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 0.6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This single-track trail winds up the geographical uplift known as Red Butte and provides stunning views of the valley.

 

RIO GRANDE TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Rollerblade, Picnic)
Surface: Paved/Unpaved
Length: 19 miles
Difficulty: Easy
This trail, which goes from Aspen to Emma, is named for the railroad that used to occupy its location, and it therefore has a constant grade of no more than 3%.

 

SMUGGLER MOUNTAIN ROAD (Bike, Hike)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 1.5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This dirt road climbs to the top of Smuggler Mountain and provides good mountain bike access to the Hunter Creek Valley.

 

STEIN TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 0.6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This trail connects from Aspen Airport Business Center (AABC) to the Rio Grande Trail. Currently a very steep trail section drops off the hill behind the AABC that is very challenging. The trail then continues up-valley along the very scenic section of the Roaring Fork River and crosses an old railroad bridge.

 

SUNNY SIDE TRAIL (Bike, Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 7.1 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
The Sunny Side Trail is an excellent fall, winter, and spring trail due to is south facing aspect. It climbs steeply from the Roaring Fork River up the side of Red Mountain near Starwood. Eventually this trail will connect you to Hunter Creek, Lenado, and Van Horn Park.

 

UTE TRAIL (Hike, Picnic)
Surface: Unpaved
Length: 0.9 miles
Difficulty: Hard
Hiking only. This single-track switchbacks up the mountain to the overlook, 700 vertical feet up, and then continues to the summit of Ajax mountain, another 2,300 vertical feet of gain. Good footwear is strongly recommended.
