Why register your bicycle, skis or snowboard?
If your gear is stolen, police need the serial number to aid in the recovery of your property. When gear is registered with the Aspen Police, the serial number can be cross-referenced with the owner's name to prove ownership. Recovered goods that are not registered have less chance of being returned to their rightful owners, since proof of ownership is often more difficult.
Registering your equipment with Aspen Police can also help deter theft. Upon registering your property, you will receive a sticker indicating that an item has been registered with the Aspen Police. Thieves may be less likely to steal a bike with a registration sticker since its owner can easily be identified. Stolen, registered bicycles are also posted on both statewide and nationwide crime computers.
