Aspen, CO – May 7, 2012– The City of Aspen has been recognized by the non-profit Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community for the 20th time. In order to earn this recognition, the City has to meet four standards which include having a tree department, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance proclamation.

“We commend Aspen’s elected officials, volunteers and its citizens for providing vital care for their urban forest,” said John Rosenow, Chief Executive and Founder of the Arbor Day Foundation.  “Trees provide numerous environmental, economic and health benefits to millions of people each day, and we applaud communities that make planting and caring for trees a top priority.”

Through its urban forestry program the City of Aspen has both acommunity forestmanagement plan, as well as a noxious vegetation/restoration management plan.  “These plans outline good stewardship practices like pruning, planting, hazard tree identification and monitoring, insect and disease control, restoration, and upkeep of our GIS-based tree inventory program,” said Chris Forman, City Forester.

In honor of the City’s trees, citizens are invited to celebrate Arbor Day Saturday, May 12th at Paepcke Park from 10am-12:30 pm.

Festivities include free hotdogs and drinks, informational booths on topics including planting, care, insect/disease identification, community forest updates, as well as raffles, games, bucket truck rides for kids and free tree give-aways*  (*You must have proof of residency with you such as a utility bill.)

Reading of the Arbor Day Proclamation will be at 10am. For more information contact the Parks Department at 970-920-5120.
