Greenhouse Gas Inventories

Emissions Inventory

In 2004, the City of Aspen calculated its baseline community-wide emissions inventory. An update was completed using 2007 data. Emissions inventories will be updated approximately every three years to inform the community on its progress in meeting 2020 reductions goals and to inform future policies and programs to address carbon emissions. The Aspen QuickTracker describes early detection of major drivers of greenhouse gas emissions for 2009.

An updated emissions inventory is currently being assessed and will be available soon.

2004 to 2007: Emissions down, Energy Consumption up

Emissions decreased by 8.3 percent from 2004 to 2007. Energy consumption in the buildings sector increased.

major emissions sources chart

Emissions down 8.3 percent over 2004

  • City of Aspen Electric energy supply = 73 percent non-carbon (up 29 percent from 2004)

        - Non-carbon includes renewable sources (wind, hydro, etc.) and nuclear (power purchased from the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska)

  • Air travel down 17 percent

        - In part a result of an improvement in data availability

        - Airport closure played a minor role – closed for two months during the tourist “offseason” (April to the beginning of June 2007)

Buildings: Energy consumption up

  • Electric use increased 10 percent on average
  • Natural gas use increased 4 percent

Transportation: Fuel consumption down

  • Ground transportation: Fuel use down 4 percent
  • Air travel & aviation: Fuel use down 12 percent
