Automotive Care

Rain and snowmelt from streets, parking areas, and driveways pick up oil and grease that can drip from cars as well as metals from brake linings and tires.  These chemicals drain into the storm system, which eventually discharges into our rivers.  Obviously, these pollutants are extremely toxic to the fish and aquatic life, as well as wildlife that hang out by the river and humans that recreate in the river.

Of course, driving less is best!  Carpool, take RFTA, or ride a bike as often as possible.  However, if you own an automobile, use these tips for caring for your vehicle.

  • Schedule regular maintenance for your car to prevent fluid leaks.
  • If you perform maintenance yourself, use drip pans to catch drips and spills.
  • Never hose down spills into the gutter or street!
  • Use kitty litter, sawdust, or cornmeal to clean up leaks and spills immediately.  Sweep up the mixture, bag it, and throw it in the garbage.
  • Recycle motor oil, antifreeze, etc at an automotive center or the landfill (see below).
  • Dispose of oil at the Pitkin County Resource Recovery Facility (landfill) - call for an appointment first.
  • Wash your car on your lawn - grass and soil are natural filters for pollutants. Use as little soap and water as possible. Use a bucket instead of a running hose and use biodegradable phosphate-free soap.
  • OR take your car to a commercial car wash facility (water goes to the sanitation district's treatment facility).
