Energy Awareness Month

October is Energy Awareness Month ...Are you ready?

The 2010 Energy Awareness Month theme is POWERING AMERICA; We're On Target. This year’s theme depicts how, across the nation, Federal agencies continue to zero in on energy targets to stimulate the economy, lower operating expenses, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and achieve long-term energy and economic security. The Federal Government is pointing the way toward energy security and renewed economic prosperity. Investments in clean energy technologies are accelerating at an unprecedented pace.

The procurement of efficient products is reducing energy demand. Constructing, operating, and maintaining high-performance buildings is tapping the power of efficiency and renewables. Collectively, these efforts are expanding industries, creating jobs, and positioning America at the center of a global economy for sustainable energy.

The Federal Government, as well as the City of Aspen, agree that creating a more prosperous future for our Nation's economy means making investments in energy efficiency and clean energy today. Innovation in energy technology will decrease our dependence use, strengthen our economy, and reduce the dangerous pollution that causes climate change.

The City of Aspen Utilities Department wants to know, are YOU ready for Energy Awareness Month?

Using “Efficiency First” to Prepare for Energy Awareness Month:

We all know that there is a lot you can do to save energy and money at home; but, it is not always clear where to start. Our motto, “Efficiency First!” The key to reducing your home’s energy consumption is to make a whole-house energy efficiency plan. This way, you are ensured that the dollars you invest to save energy are spent wisely and appropriately.

  1. First, find out which parts of your house use the most energy. The easiest way to do this is with a home energy assessment and you can sign up for one by sending an email to audit@aspenenergyefficiency.com .
  2. Make a plan! How much money do you currently spend on energy? Where are your greatest energy losses? Can you do the job yourself, or will you need to hire a contractor? What is your budget and how much free time do you have to spend?
  3. Implement. Start with efficiency improvements that yield the best bang for your buck and you will start reducing your utility bill and put money back into your pockets!

By sticking to your whole-house energy efficiency plan, you will have a strategy for making smart purchases and home improvements that maximize energy efficiency and save the most money! Remember, “Efficiency First!”
