Tonight the City of Aspen named Howie Mallory the 2010 Volunteer of the Year.

The honor was announced at the 2010 Boards and Commissions Volunteer Party at the Wheeler Opera House. All city volunteers were invited to attend to honor their dedication and volunteerism.

“Mr. Mallory one of the original members of the Open Space Board and has served for more than eight years on the board. His strong financial background and professionalism have been incredibly beneficial to the board’s budget responsibilities, but any of his fellow board members will attest that it’s also his wonderful sense of humor that makes him such a joy to work with,” said Aspen Mayor Mick Ireland.  

Through his work on the Open Space Board, Mallory has helped to advocate for and acquire over 663 acres of open space, as well as pioneer 20 new pedestrian trail projects. 

Mallory has also served on the Nordic Council for more than 20 years and was instrumental in the creation of the Nordic Trails Master Plan and the re-authorization of the voter-approved Pitkin County Mill Levy, which insures a solid funding base for the Nordic trails operation.

“He is the inspiration for numerous trail connections, but he also gets his hands dirty. He helped with the planting of over 50 trees on the Aspen Golf Course,” Ireland said. 

One of Mallory’s latest ways of contributing to Aspen is by serving on the City’s Financial Advisory Board. He has used his extensive financial background and knowledge to advise the City on the Wheeler expansion project, financial policies and the 2010 and 2011 budgets.

“We are honored to have a citizen such as Howie Mallory in this community, and for these and many other reasons, he is our 2010 Volunteer of the Year,” said Ireland.
