Aspen, CO – June 27, 2012– The City of Aspen is officially dedicating new improvements to the John Denver Sanctuary on Sunday, July 1 at 12:30pm in conjunction with the Aspen Ideas Festival Block Party. The 4.5 acre parcel of Rio Grande Park adjacent to the Roaring Fork River will all be dedicated as the “John Denver Sanctuary” and includes upgrades to the park that are both beautiful and environmental. The expanded Sanctuary includes a courtyard area, wooden bridges and rock pathways that lead through a welcoming and inviting public space that also serves as a regional stormwater facility that filters stormwater runoff, through systems such as constructed wetlands resulting in cleaner water entering the Roaring Fork River.
“It has been the long term goal to upgrade the sanctuary,” said Jeff Woods, Parks and Recreation Manager for the City of Aspen. “This has been in the master plan since 1998. Finally with the time, money and support from Annie Denver and many of John Denver’s friends and family this vision has come to fruition. This is a place of spectacular beauty with incredible environmental benefits.”
The improved sanctuary includes newly planted trees, shrubs and flower beds, and a boulder garden featuring native river boulders placed in a circle to represent the circle of life. A single spruce tree has been planted at the circle’s center symbolizing the spirit of John Denver. The Sanctuary was dedicated by the voters in Aspen as a “Specially Designated Space” in 2001 and is continuing to live up to its goals.
Sunday’s dedication will be at the plaza adjacent to the Theatre Aspen Tent. Speakers include: Annie Denver; Jeff Woods, Parks and Recreation Manager; April Barker Long, Stormwater Manager; Mick Ireland, Mayor of Aspen and members of Aspen City Council.
Parks staff will offer guided tours of the Sanctuary after the dedication ceremony. For more information call the City of Aspen Parks Department at 920-5120.
