ASPEN, CO - 06/22/2010 - The City of Aspen has a large number of recreational-type vehicles sharing the roads and parking spaces. Aspen Police Officer Leon Murray says, "It is important to bring awareness about the rules of the road for recreational vehicles in an effort to create a safer traffic experience for our whole community."
Electric scooters, Segways, and gas-powered seated scooters with 49cc engines (or smaller):
· Are all considered street legal and are not permitted on sidewalks or pedestrian malls.
· Allowed to park in areas designated "No Parking Here to Corner" for free.
· Drivers must be at least 16 years of age and possesses a valid driver's license, but do not need a motorcycle endorsement.
· Requires a $5 registration sticker obtained from the Colorado Department of Revenue.
· Mandatory eye protection for all drivers and passengers. Mandatory helmets for drivers and passengers under the age of 18.
Gas-powered seated scooters with 50cc engines (or larger):
· Are considered street legal and are not permitted on sidewalks or pedestrian malls.
· Allowed to park in areas designated "No Parking Here to Corner" for free.
· Drivers must have a valid driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement.
· Are required to register the scooter and insure it.
· Colorado law states that if you cannot show proof of insurance for your automobile or scooter your driver's license can be suspended for one year.
· Mandatory eye protection for all drivers and passengers. Mandatory helmets for drivers and passengers under the age of 18.
Dirt bikes and ATVs:
· Are not street legal, nor are they permitted on sidewalks and pedestrian malls.
· Drivers are not required to have valid driver's license.
· Are usually required to register the vehicle with the Forest Service or Colorado State Parks.
