City Announces Canary Tags Project at Aspen Middle School
City of Aspen’s Canary Initiative is partnering with the Aspen School District and Plant Trees 4 Life to plant 44 trees at Aspen Middle School on Wednesday, September 15, at 12:30 p.m.
“The tree planting is Aspen’s first Canary Tag project,” said Lauren McDonell, interim director for the Canary Initiative, who explained that the program has been accumulating funds since its inception and has been looking for quality, local projects. Canary Tags are investments in local projects that combat global climate change and enable individuals, visitors and businesses to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. These funds and projects are coordinated by the City.
As the trees grow, they will store an estimated 130.5 tons of carbon dioxide, and they will also provide shade, beauty and cleaner air for the community.
“The District is excited to be partnering with the City of Aspen for its first Canary Tag Project,” said Dr. John Maloy, superintendent of schools. “This project presents a rich learning opportunity for our students as it will assist them in becoming increasingly more aware and engaged in global climate change issues within their own community.”
