City Official Helps Shape Int'l Energy Code
City of Aspen Chief Building Official Stephen Kanipe is continuing his role in creating international energy codes aimed at conserving energy.
“Since 1995, Chief Building Official Stephen Kanipe has spent countless hours bringing energy efficient building codes to the City of Aspen,” said Community Development Director Chris Bendon. “In recent years, he has expanded that role to an international scale. Because of Stephen’s work, Aspen plays a prominent role in energy code development and remains at the forefront of energy policy.”
Kanipe and other building officials from around the state represented the Colorado Chapter of the International Code Council and the City of Aspen during the development of the 2012 edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The code encourages energy conservation through efficiency in envelope design, mechanical systems, lighting systems and the use of new materials and techniques.
"It is notable that the votes that will have the most profound impact on national energy and environmental policy this year were not held in Washington or a state capital, but by governmental officials assembled by the International Code Council (ICC) in Charlotte, NC," said Energy Efficient Codes Coalition Executive Director William Fay. “Nearly 500 state and local government representatives spent five days of rigorous hearings to evaluate and pass judgment on hundreds of proposals to improve (or weaken) the code’s residential and commercial chapters. The ICC is to be congratulated for the tremendous efforts of its members to finish this code and achieve substantial energy efficiency."
The 2012 edition of the IECC will most likely achieve the 30 percent boost in efficiency standards sought by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National Association of State Energy Officials, governors and lawmakers.
