Rio Grande Recycling Is Back!
The City of Aspen and Pitkin County have been working to upgrade the Rio Grande Recycling Center this fall. The project is now complete, and the City will be celebrating the opening of the improved facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m.

“The site really needed help with drainage and paving, as well as a general sprucing up,” said Lee Cassin, director of Environmental Health for the City. “We did a great deal of outreach to neighbors and users of the site to see what they would like to see there. We hope the improvements make it easier for Aspenites to recycle in a clean location – free of the mud and clutter that often plagued the site before renovation.”

City staff completed the renovation “in house” with the Parks Department designing the site and completing grading, rock wall construction and landscaping. Other changes include a newly installed security camera that will be used to watch for and prosecute illegal dumping at the new site.

Residents and businesses in Pitkin County and the City can drop-off the same types of recyclables as have always been accepted at the site including, comingled containers, newspapers/magazines, office paper, cardboard, plastic bags, phone books and household batteries. The grass and leaf drop-off bin will also be available for the last few weeks of November.

“This project was a true collaborative effort between multiple City departments, with cooperation from Pitkin County as well,” said Stephen Ellsperman, Parks and Open Space Director. “The finished product is outstanding and very functional!”

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Rio Grande Recycling Center this Tuesday.
