County Seeks Firm for AABC/Airport Crossing

(Aspen, Co) After several years of local public meetings county officials are moving forward with plans to improve the pedestrian crossing near the Aspen Airport Business Center and Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. The first step is hiring a consulting engineering firm to design and plan the project. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) from firms across the country is currently underway.

“Improving the pedestrian crossing in the vicinity of the Airport Business Center and Airport emerged as one of the top priorities of the concerned group of citizens we’ve been meeting with,” said G.R. Fielding, Pitkin County Engineer. “The firm we hire will help us determine the best pedestrian crossing scenario out there. We don’t know yet whether it will be an overpass or underpass but whatever we do will involve a continued public process,” Fielding said.

The engineering firm will be selected by a team including representatives from the Colorado Department of Transportation, Roaring Fork Transit Agency, the City of Aspen and Pitkin County.

Once a firm is selected public meetings will be held to choose the best crossing alternative. The RFQ deadline is April 22, 2011 and hopes are to select a firm by May 11th.
