Highway 82 Eastbound Reduced to One Lane Due to Sinkhole

Highway 82 Eastbound Reduced To

One Lane Due To Sinkhole

Pitkin County, Colorado – June 10, 2011 – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has reduced eastbound traffic on Colorado State Highway 82 to one lane in the area of the Pitkin County landfill this afternoon due to a sink hole in the left lane of travel. At approximately 2:00 p.m., Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office Deputies notified CDOT crews of a depression in the road at mile marker 32.2. A CDOT crew responded and, while repairing the depression in the roadway, the pavement gave way and revealed an area of eroded soil under the surface of the road.

CDOT crews have diverted up-valley traffic around the sink hole. Motorists can expect to use the right shoulder area as the primary lane of up-valley travel in the construction zone. CDOT representatives expect the Highway 82 eastbound lane reduction to remain in place over the weekend while preliminary repairs to the highway are started. Troopers from the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) will be on scene throughout the weekend and will enforce a reduced construction zone speed limit. Highway speed limits in the area have been reduced to 40 miles per hour in the interest of safety.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists travelling in the area of the lane reduction to use caution and to abide by all posted construction zone speed limits. CDOT has made up-to-the-minute information available on their website at www.cotrip.org.

Additional press releases will be issued as needed.
