COMPOST PICK-UP NOW AVAILABLE TO ASPEN RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES

Aspen, CO – June 30, 2011 – The City of Aspen is proud to announce that composting pick-up service is now available to all Aspen residents and businesses, as well as those in Pitkin County. People can now separate fruit, vegetable, meats, dairy and paper waste products from their garbage, put it in a compost bucket and have it picked up curbside along with garbage and recyclables.
Businesses, homeowners, and HOA’s in Pitkin County that want to start composting can receive free inside collection bins from the City and can choose from three different waste haulers, all offering a variety of pricing and schedules.
Since homeowners pay for the amount of trash that is produced, there is an opportunity to save money by composting. Restaurants and businesses can also realize money savings by composting. “Around 30% of residential waste could be composted and that number can be as high as 70% for a restaurant,” said Ashley Cantrell, City of Aspen Environmental Health Specialist.
Compost guidelines are available on the Environmental Health website. Unlike backyard composting, the new municipal program accepts fruit, vegetable, meat, dairy, fish and bread waste. In addition, soiled paper products and approved compostable containers are accepted.
Four restaurants are already composting. The city of Aspen would like to thank the Aspen Meadows, Butcher’s Block, Boogie’s, and the Maroon Creek Club for their willingness to participate in the new compost program.
