Rustic Cabin for Sale by Open Space and Trails

Does not include land and must be moved from the property on which it sits

(ASHCROFT, CO) A small rustic cabin that was built in the late 1950s is for sale by Pitkin County Open Space and Trails. The so-called Sunnegga Cabin was built by longtime Ashcroft steward, Stuart Mace and was first used as a gift shop and first incarnation of the Toklat Gallery. The Mace family sold Navajo rugs, Indian sweaters, and dinosaur bone jewelry, among other things from the cabin until a larger, more permanent Toklat Gallery was constructed in the mid-1970s.

The Sunnegga cabin was moved to the now county-owned Ryan Parcel in 1977 where it was used as a warming hut for winter backcountry ski trips.

“It’s a well built and nice looking little cabin,” said Stewardship and Trails Manager Gary Tennenbaum. “The cabin has to be removed from the property since this parcel was involved in the Ryan Land Exchange with the US Forest Service and as part of the contract with the Forest Service the cabin has to be moved off the property.”

Pitkin County will be taking bids through a Requests for Proposals process on the cabin until July 20th. Potential buyers must prepare a brief statement as to how they intend to reuse the cabin. The complete RFP is available online at www.aspenpitkin.com/rfp.

“We’re hoping someone can come up with a public use of the cabins and we will give special consideration to proposals that intend on using the cabin for the public,” Tennenbaum said.

The purchaser will be responsible for moving the cabin, filling holes left by it on the property and backfilling the property to its natural grade.

Bidders are urged to inspect the property prior to submitting a bid. The cabin is located 12 miles up Castle Creek Road off of the Cathedral Lake Trailhead access road.
