New Soft-Surface Section of Rio Grande Trail Opens in Woody Creek

(Woody Creek, CO) A new soft surface route parallel to the Rio Grande Trail from the Woody Creek water tank to McLain Flats Road is now open. This section now offers a mile-long separated soft and hard trail surface with mountain and river views crossing a sage meadow.

“We really strive to create separated trails when we can,” said Pitkin County Open Space and Trails Recreation Planner, Lindsey Utter. “It allows equestrians a little more room away from bicyclists, and gives runners and walkers a softer surface on which to tread,” Utter said.

Open Space and Trails acknowledges the support of neighbors and contractors who contributed to the project including Elam Construction for access to its private road during construction, Aspen Earthmoving for constructing the trail with minimal soil disturbance, Holy Cross Energy for allowing the trail within its utility easement, the late Dr. Jay Sterling Baxter, and the other partners of Woody Creek Development Inc. for their trail easement donations, and The Woody Creek Caucus for its vision in seeking a dual surface route.

All trail users are invited to take the “Trail User Survey” now underway online at www.aspenpitkin.com/openspace.
