Aspen, CO – September 19, 2012 – The City of Aspen and Pitkin County Employee Green Team recently closed their annual grant cycle, awarding $3000 worth of funding to City and County departments for environmental projects. “The City and County Green Team is a great collaborative effort,” said Ashley Cantrell, Senior Environmental Health Specialist for the City. “It’s wonderful to see City and County employees come together to support environmental projects that would otherwise not happen without Green Team funding.” City and County employees can choose to contribute to the Green Team’s fund each month. Those funds are used throughout the year to host luncheons and workshops that provide tools for Green Team members to make their lives greener. Each fall, the Green Team solicits grant requests of up to $1000 each which support environmental values and sustainability. This year the Green Team received eight grant requests from different departments and a total of $3000 was granted to six departments.
The projects include new LED lighting for the City/County Communications Department, rain sensors for County facilities to help use water wisely, and whiteboards for meeting rooms at the Water Department to reduce paper use. In addition, a few programmable thermostats which weren’t addressed during an earlier efficiency project at the Kid’s First building will be funded, and the Green Team is supporting the installation of a garden at the City Streets Department. Funding is also being awarded to the Wheeler Opera House to help with the installation of a water fountain and reusable water bottle filler at the Wheeler Opera House to eliminate the need for single-use bottled water.
The Green Team was started in 2000 by City and County employees, raises approximately $3000 annually, and has funded over fifty small environmental projects since inception. It is a valuable voluntary effort that contributes to effective actions that support City and County environmental values.
