Aspen, Colorado – January 18, 2017 – If you have old clothes and shoes unfit for the thrift store, there is now a solution for recycling these goods. Look for a white and green USAgain collection box at the Rio Grande Recycling Center in Aspen or take them to the Pitkin County Landfill during operating hours.
USAgain is a for-profit company that collects unwanted textiles and resells them in the U.S. and abroad, effectively diverting millions of pounds of clothing from landfills, generating new revenue streams for U.S. businesses and non-profits, and fueling local economies in emerging countries.
Approximately 1,600 tons of textiles end up in the Pitkin County Landfill annually. “This equates to 4.3% of our total waste stream,” said Cathy Hall, Pitkin County Landfill Manager. “By diverting this waste we save landfill space, reduce carbon emissions, and find a beneficial second life for these items.”
The USAgain clothing recycling bin at the recycling center is a way to keep those materials out of the landfill and back into the production cycle. “Aspen is always leading the way in sustainability, so we are confident this will be a successful diversion program”, said Liz Chapman, Waste Reduction Specialist for the City of Aspen.
