
Our mission:
The Transportation Department develops, implements, and maintains an
innovative, safe, and efficient transportation system for the effective movement of citizens,
guests, and goods in Pitkin County. Through strong relationships and inclusive collaboration
with the local communities and regional transportation partners, we strive to meet transportation
goals while maintaining the quality of life, preserving the environment, and enhancing the unique
character of our County.
The Transportation Dept manages the structural and functional needs of County infrastructure,
including roads, bridges, and drainage structures. Develops and oversees the planning and
implementation of the multi-year Capital Road Plan. Collaborates with the Asses Division
regarding the capital maintenance plan and other asset's capital needs and permits.
Responsibilities include the efficient planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads,
bridges, and traffic control devices on the County highway system. The Department provides for
the overall management, direction, coordination, and budgeting for approximately 440 miles of
County Highways. The Department seeks and implements Federal and State funding assistance for
eligible projects and pursues cooperative projects with other governmental units. Partnering with
contractors, utility companies, other governmental units and other project participants to ensure
an efficient construction schedule.
