To help the community in understanding the process of Civil
Service, we would like to explain our procedures.
COLORADO LAW requires a sheriff to use "due diligence" in service of civil papers. When
a sheriff serves process in a civil case, the sheriff may call upon any person in the
county for assistance in the making of such service, i.e., if reasonably necessary.
S30-10-516, 12A C.R.S. (Repl. Vol. 1986).
Employees of the Pitkin County Sheriff's office are prohibited from giving legal advice.
Should you need legal assistance, you may obtain information regarding free legal aid by
calling Northwest Colorado Legal Services Project at 1-800-521-6968.
Our office prefers to exercise as much respect toward the individual as possible in the
service of civil papers. From time to time, we find it necessary to contact an individual
at work. In keeping with our goal of respect we prefer to leave a message for the person
to contact us. If we are not contacted by the individual, we go to the place of employment
during the individual's scheduled work time and contact the person there.
Fees for service must be paid in advance. Checks can be made out to Pitkin County
Sheriff's Department. We will need three copies of the papers to serve with payment
and cover sheet. If you are due a refund, a check will be mailed to you. If you owe
additional fees, you will be billed. All fees for mileage are per mile, round trip.
Attempted service of papers is based upon the information you provide. Please fill in our
cover sheet or provide a cover letter including, name, home address and phone; work
address and phone; kind of paperwork to be served (i.e. summons, subpoena etc.) to whom
(person, business, registered agent etc.) description of person and best time for service.
Also include the date and time the papers must be served by and any other information
that may be helpful in completion of service.
