Pitkin County protects the environment through the education of our community, diversion of recoverable materials, and proper waste management.

The Pitkin County Resource Recovery Department is a leader in the Solid Waste industry. In 2004, we were able to divert nearly 60% of the waste which we received through various diversion programs like recycling, composting, and aggregate recovery. We are constantly searching for new ways to keep waste out of our landfill to ensure that it stays open for community use as long as possible.
