Wood Waste and Composting
The Pitkin County Solid Waste Center began its composting program in 1994 in an effort the
keep wood and brush out of the landfill and to put biosolids from the sanitation districts to
good use. The Solid Waste Center creates quality compost according to requirements set forth by
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment (CDPHE). All of our compost undergoes testing to ensure it is of highest quality
before being sold to the public.
Most of the material that comes into the Solid Waste Center is wood, brush and dirt products.
Customers that bring in their brush and yard waste separated from trash, receive a reduced
tipping fee. By composting these items, valuable landfill spaced is being saved as long as
someone buys our products. If these products do not sell, they will more than likely be added
to the landfill.
