Wildlife Protection
During the spring and summer of 2007, Pitkin County has seen numerous human-bear conflicts. Our local bear population is experiencing a shortage of natural food sources and has turned to our trash cans. To combat this increasing problem and try to limit the number of bears who are trapped, relocated, or euthanized, Pitkin County has strengthened this effort by approving an Emergency Ordinance on August 22nd.
Pitkin County already requires wildlife-proof refuse containers or dumpsters under existing code. The emergency ordinance brings changes to these requirements aimed at improving the enforceability of the regulations. These changes signal a shift that county staff is increasing the priority of these wildlife violations.
Some Highlights of the Ordinance:
- All refuse must be stored in containers which make it inaccessible to wildlife.
- All containers must be kept closed and secure except when waste is being deposited.
- If the container is damaged or not working properly, the responsible party must repair or replace the container within 48 hours of written notification.
- Containers may only be placed outside for pickup from 6am to 6pm.
- Non-compliant waste containers are subject to the following Penalty Assessments:
