Frequently Asked Questions
When do I need to test for asbestos?
If you're doing remodeling that involves cutting into dry wall to make a new
door or window for example, moving walls, removing floor tiles, linoleum, or
carpet, if 1) you take out more than 160 sq. ft. of any material except bricks,
concrete or steel, 2) the building is anything other than a single family home
or condo with 10 or fewer units, and 3) the material wasn't put in after 1988,
you need to have an asbestos test before getting a building permit.
It has to be done by a certified asbestos testing firm.
How many fireplaces are allowed in Aspen?
Each building is allowed two gas log fireplaces, two certified clean-burning woodstoves,
or one of each. NO woodburning fireplaces are allowed. There is no limit to the number
of decorative gas fireplace appliances.
What should I do if I think I got sick at a restaurant?
Call our office right away - we will need to get a 72-hour food history. While many
people think their most recent meal made them sick, it is often really an earlier
meal. Also, it's very important to see a doctor and get a stool culture so we can
identify the exact source, and to call us as soon as possible so we can talk to the restaurant manager.
What is the main cause of air pollution in Aspen?
It's definitely traffic! 83% of our small particulate air pollution on bad days comes from
the thousands of vehicles traveling repeatedly over sanded roads. This grinds up the dirt
and makes it become airborne. This particulate pollution causes increased rates of asthma,
hospital admissions, breathing difficulties and even death! What can you do? Take the bus,
carpool, ride a bike, combine errands, walk, shop by phone - every little bit helps!
