Bike Safety
The City of Aspen supports and encourages bicycle transportation and recreation. The Aspen Police Department recognizes the importance of bicycle education and safety. Here are some safety tips to help you and/or your family have an enjoyable and safe bicycling experience.
On Street Riding:
- Never ride on the sidewalk.
- Never ride against traffic.
- Always ride single file when there is traffic within 300 feet.
- Obey all traffic laws, signs and signals.
- Yield to pedestrians
- Use a headlight, tail light and reflectors at night.
- Make eye contact with drivers.
- Always wear a helmet, eye protection and gloves.
- If you are going the speed limit, you may use the entire lane of traffic.
Remember: Bicyclists have all the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle and can be penalized for violating traffic laws, including Driving (bicycling) Under the Influence. Ride the same as you would when driving a car.
Multi-use Trail Riding:
- Don't block the trail.
- Groups should ride single file and not use more than half the trail.
- Control your speed.
- Announce yourself when passing another person or biker.
- Yield to walkers and skaters.
- Stay on existing trails
- Respect wildlife.
- Plan ahead, bring water, food and sunscreen if necessary.
Whether you're commuting to work, running errands or just out having fun, please remember to be courteous to other bikers and drivers. Communicate, pay attention and follow the rules of the road.
