Position Summary:
Performs a variety of Law Enforcement and Public Safety functions through teamwork with the Aspen Community.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Works under the direct supervision of the Patrol Supervisor, Assistant Patrol Supervisor or an assigned Field Training Officer and general guidance of the Assistant Chief of Operations and the Investigations Supervisor.
Job Responsibilities:
- Responds to calls for service and take appropriate action in accordance with the department mission, values, policies and procedures and Federal, State and Local Laws. Calls for service include, but are not limited to criminal, traffic, civil/domestic situations, mutual aid, medical and fire response.
- Assumes appropriate ICS roles as necessary.
- Proactively addresses crime prevention, criminal traffic and safety issues. Issues verbal and /or written warnings, citations and/or makes arrests as appropriate.
- Drafts reports and other forms of documentation accurately, completely and in a timely manner. Drafts warrant-less arrest affidavits, arrest warrants and search warrants accurately, completely and in a timely manner.
- Conducts thorough investigations striving to make personal contacts with all involved parties. Takes the time to collect and process evidence and information. Documents the investigation accurately, completely and in a timely manner. Conducts follow-up investigations as assigned and keeps the victim appraised of the status of the investigation.
- Is well prepared, punctual, accurate and composed when testifying in court and attending public meetings. Works with the media, other public safety agencies, city departments and other community resources as necessary.
- Maintains basic qualifications to include firearms, defensive tactics and driving. Keeps current with all required certifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be a United States citizen or possess a valid work permit.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a valid State of Colorado Driver's License after hire.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within six months, a Colorado P.O.S.T. certification.
- Must successfully complete the Field Training Program.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within six months a Red Cross Certification for first aid and a cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Must take an Aspen Police Department or City of Aspen defensive driving course.
- May be required to take a polygraph test to enter employment and/or for due cause, to continue employment.
- Must have had no felony convictions.
Personal conduct and behavior on duty as well as off duty must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the department or its members.
This position requires a high level of problem-solving ability, self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of time without direct supervision.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently or up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Ability to wear APD issue equipment belt during assigned shifts.
- Flexibility and strength - stamina to sustain sitting, driving and standing for prolonged periods. Hand and arm strength needed to effectively use handgun and rifle.
- Ability to run short distances while maintaining job performance capability (talking on the radio, talking to the suspect and being able to shoot if needed), stooping, kneeling, crouching, and the balancing to prevent stumbling or falling in adverse weather conditions and terrain.
- Hearing corrected to normal and vision corrected to normal ranges including night vision.
- Physical requirements needed in arrest situations: balancing, grabbing, pulling, bending, twisting, receiving blows, spinning, falling, defensive and offensive arm swings, defensive and offensive kneeling and kicking with legs, and excellent hand/eye coordination.
Work Hours:
Four 10-hour shifts per week different from standard business hours and/or may vary from week to week. Evening and weekend hours may be required in addition to/or instead of normal hours. Must be able to work overtime when requested and respond to emergency calls at any time.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a variety of environments, both indoors and outdoors and involves exposure to a variety of temperature conditions, and requires full range of body movements. Patrol of the City occurs in all types of environmental conditions at all hours of the day and night. May be exposed to life threatening situations when responding to emergency calls.
Compensation:
Regular full time position with complete City of Aspen benefits package. Position is non-exempt. Eligible for overtime or compensatory time in excess of the designated work period. Compensation Rate is $40,976.00 to $56,555.00
