The Aspen Police Department Investigations office consists of two full time investigators. The two investigators are dedicated to felony criminal investigations. When staffing levels permit, a patrol officer is transferred to work as a temporary third investigator. This provides an opportunity for the patrol officer to obtain a more in-depth level of knowledge and experience in criminal investigation.
The Aspen Police Investigators share office space with the Pitkin County Sheriffs Office Investigators. This environment affords immediate communication and assistance on related cases as well as enhancing camaraderie between agencies.
The majority of crimes investigated by this office are felony property crimes where alcohol and/or drugs have exacerbated the severity of the crime. Patrol officers complete initial crime reports and cases that are complex in nature are assigned to investigations. Some of the investigators duties include evidence collection, crime scene processing, interviewing witnesses and suspects. Additionally, all department members attend community meetings to stay in touch with community issues facing the City of Aspen.
