Frequently Asked Questions
Why are streets signed for no parking certain hours or days of the week?
We request no parking at these times so we can push back or remove as much snow as possible from the streets.
This keeps the driving and walking areas as wide as possible and keeps our curbs and gutters open.
So, when the snow melts it will flow into the storm sewers to reduce the amount of ice build up on
the street. During the spring, summer and fall voluntary resident compliance will assist with street sweeping.
Why are we always plowed last? Why can't we be first?
After plowing the first and second priority streets, the residential streets are next.
The snow accumulation is greater and the roads are narrower and steeper in some parts of
town. This is why hills like McSkimming and Knollwood are plowed before the residential
areas. The streets have been prioritized according to traffic volume and public safety
requirements. The commercial core area (Main to Durant, Original to Aspen) is first,
followed by the higher elevation roads and then the residential areas.
Can the City remove snow from in front of my mailbox and driveway?
Property owners or tenants are responsible for snow removal on sidewalks, in or around
driveways or mailboxes. The Street Department plows the snow to the side to clear the
streets of as much snow as possible. In most cases, the snow is in the city right of way.
Please do not plow the snow back on to the street since this creates a traffic hazard.
Why do the plows damage my yard and landscaping?
The equipment operators use the utmost care to avoid damaging any landscaping features.
However the snowplows need to push the snow past the pavement edge, into the snow storage area.
If fragile landscaping is located within the City right-of-way, it should be moved back onto private property.
Please keep all extensive landscaping out of the snow storage area located in the first 5 feet
from the edge of the asphalt. The City is not responsible for damage within the public right of way.
Why have all the main roads not been cleared of snow by 7a.m.?
Many snowstorms start after 5 a.m. causing plowing schedule delays. Late morning storms
can cause daylong problems on the streets when the plows simply can not keep up with the
snowfall. Plowing is done throughout the day, but snow removal after a large snowstorm
is scheduled throughout the night and early morning. The early morning hours allow the
streets to be cleared more safely, in the shortest time possible, with minimal impact to traffic and residents.
