Leash Law
There is a leash law in Pitkin County. It states that any dog off its property must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet in length. Any dog outside on its own property must be in voice and sight control of its owner or keeper, or contained in such a way that the dog cannot leave its property. (The term "contained" includes but is not limited to: a leash, chain, invisible fence, kennel or fenced yard.)

Pitkin County dog licenses
Pitkin County dog licenses may be purchased through the following Veterinary clinics throughout the upper Roaring Fork Valley: Pitkin County dog licenses may also be purchased through the Sheriff's department located in the County Court House 506 E. Main St., Aspen. Citizens may also mail their dogs Rabies vaccination record with a check made out to PCAS for the correct amount and a license will be mailed to you.

The cost will be $6.00 for altered dogs and $16.00 for intact dogs.
You must have your dog's current rabies vaccination record to be able to purchase a license.
Licenses need to be renewed every year.

Vaccinations
All dogs residing in Pitkin County must be current on their Rabies vaccination. There are 2 types. A one (1) year and a three (3) year. Both vaccinations are honored in Pitkin County.

Cats
Cats are considered free roaming animals in Pitkin County.
There is not a regulation on vaccinating your cats. The Animal Safety Division highly recommends Rabies vaccinations for all cats residing in the county. They also recommend a feline leukemia vaccination as well.

Raccoons and Skunks
The Animal Safety Division will remove nuisance raccoons and skunks. There must be alternative measures taken before a trap will be rented to the citizen. If all alternative methods do not work, a citizen may rent a trap from the Aspen/Pitkin County Animal Shelter located at 212 AABC. The rental cost is $10.00 a week (week minimum). There will also be a $70.00 deposit refundable on return of the trap. The citizen is responsible for setting the trap and catching the animal. The Animal Safety Officer will remove the trapped animal and return the trap to the citizen if need be or will return the trap to the shelter.

Big Game Wildlife
We answer all questions concerning big game in the area.
The Animal Safety Division of the Sheriffs' Department deals primarily with domestic animal and livestock issues. We will answer questions dealing with any big game animal issue within the unincorporated areas Pitkin County.
