Vegetation Management
(Including Noxious Weeds)

Our mission:
To provide education, regulatory direction and environmental awareness to preserve and protect our natural resources from the degrading impacts of exotic, invasive noxious vegetation in Pitkin County and surrounding areas.

Crystal Yates-White

The Land Management Department provides numerous services including irrigation, revegetation, and noxious weed management. The program also pursues grants and funding sources for intergovernmental weed management, reclamation, and restoration projects throughout the county.

The program is currently budgeted with a full-time land manager and 2-3 seasonal noxious weed management technicians. Together, they work to eradicate noxious weeds on 72 miles of State Highways 82 and 133, 187 miles of county and Forest Service roads, the airport and the landfill. The program also provides staff and expertise for revegetation and restoration projects throughout the County.

The Land Management Program implements the Pitkin County Weed Management Plan (adopted in November 1999) to comply with the Colorado Noxious Weed Act. The WMP requires continuing education on noxious weed issues, as well as enforcement, to encourage county landowners and businesses to control noxious weeds appropriately. The WMP contains valuable information on noxious weed control, revegetation and land stewardship for public use. The BOCC-appointed Weed Advisory Board supports and assists the program. They meet monthly.
