Pitkin County Cares Volunteer Service Award Winners Given to Ten Hard-Working Locals

Ten outstanding Roaring Fork Valley Residents were honored for their volunteer work in Pitkin County. They were nominated by citizens to receive the Pitkin County Cares Volunteer Service Awards.
The goal of the awards is to honor individuals in Pitkin County for their outstanding service, leadership and civic involvement. There are several award categories including: Children and Youth, Seniors, Health, Community Pride, Education, Good Samaritan, Centennial, Environment, Rising Stars to recognize youth and the Greg Mace Award in memory of the late lifelong volunteer Greg Mace.
AWARD WINNERS
Greg Mace Award: Carl and Katie Bergman for their lifelong commitment to the Aspen Historical Society in their efforts to preserve Aspen's mining and ranching history.
Children/Youth: Steve Martin - for his longtime youth football and baseball coaching, his involvement in the Buddy Program as a Big Buddy, and fundraising efforts for the Little Red Schoolhouse and Christmas Wish Program.
Senior Citizens: Jim Miller - for his enthusiastic participation in the "Meals on Wheels" program by delivering meals to the homebound, taking seniors to doctor's appointments and developing relationships with seniors who might otherwise be isolated.
Health: Diane Welter - for her creation of "Valley Angels" providing meals, companionship, transportation and encouragement to cancer patients.
Community Pride: Jane Battaglia - for her dedicated support of Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers and involvement in the Aspen Music Festival, Les Dames d'Aspen, Wheeler Opera House and Aspen Historical Society.
Education: Bunny Krausch - for her three decades of volunteering at the Pitkin County Library, rain or shine.
Good Samaritan: Alyssa Genshaft - for her leadership and hands-on involvement in the DonorDirect "Tide Me Over" Lending Fund.
Environment: Jon Chapman - for his dedication to the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service as a volunteer wilderness ranger and trainer.
Rising Star: Alayne Kane - for spearheading a successful relief effort at Aspen High School for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Exceptional One Time Event: Adam Goldsmith - for his coordination of highly successful fundraisers for the Aspen/Pitkin Animal Shelter, including the annual Pet Calendar.
Pitkin County Commissioners recognized the winners at a special ceremony during their regular, televised meeting on Wednesday, August 23rd, The winners were also honored at the final Snowmass Free Summer Concert on Fanny Hill on Thursday, August 24th.
