Pitkin County History of Funding
Sources of Funding
In 2002, the voters of Pitkin County passed a 5-year property tax dedicated for the sole purpose
of providing funding to health and human services and community non-profit programs through The
Healthy Community Fund grant program. In 2006, that dedicated property tax was again strongly
supported by the voters, providing $1,250,000 in funding in 2007 for non-profits whose services
fulfill the intent of the ballot question and help Pitkin County achieve its community goals. The
tax is funded through 2012, and will grow each year at the rate of inflation and local growth.
As stated in the ballot referendum, the Healthy Community Fund provides a stable funding source
for non-profit programs including:
- Senior programs
- Support for Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
- Care for the Terminally Ill and their Families
- Mental Health Counseling for Individuals and Families
- Drug and Alcohol Counseling and Prevention
- Services for Adults and Children with Developmental Disabilities
- Public Health Services including pre-natal care, family planning and immunizations, and communicable disease control
- Programs that Conserve a Healthy Environment
- Prevention, Intervention and Support Services for Children, Youth and Families
Funding priority is given to programs specified in the ballot language.
Secondary funding priority is given to requests that address the broader
Community Goals with an emphasis on human
services.
