In 1998 the Aspen Public School District (RE1) maintained one each of an elementary, middle, and high school. Aspen High school's athletic classification is AAA. This system is augmented by an additional private elementary school.

During the period between 1992 and 1997, the general population grew by 13%. The Pitkin County School District experienced a 15% increase in school enrollment during this time period, with the number of students in 1992 (1,125) growing to 1,290 in 1997. The last two years have witnessed a modest increase to a 1999 enrollment total of 1302. However, it should be noted that the School District allows out of district students to attend in order to fill the school. A majority of these students entered at the elementary grade level.

1999 Racial/ethnic mixes of students are roughly congruent with Pitkin County figures. A higher percentage (6.7%) of Hispanic children enrolled in Aspen schools is the only notable difference. The total dropout rate is 0.8 % and the average graduation rate is 91%.*
