On December 14, 2010, the Eagle County Board of County Commissioners approved a second 3-year contract for Eagle County to provide public assistance services to Pitkin County residents. The Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners approved the contract on December 15, 2010. These services include programs such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, Colorado Works, Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), Child Care Assistance, Aid to the Needy Disabled, Old Age Pension and Emergency Assistance. Eagle County has been providing these services for Pitkin County since 2008 under a previous agreement. Since that agreement began in January 2008, the Pitkin County caseload has increased approximately 125%.
Nan Sundeen, Pitkin County Director of Health & Human Services thanked the Eagle County Commissioners for their openness to the idea of sharing services and being pioneers in regionalism for public assistance services. “This partnership with Eagle County has resulted in more Pitkin County residents receiving benefits for which they are qualified, higher levels of compliance with program rules and processing time frames” she said.
Kathleen Lyons, Eagle County Economic Services Director stated “Over the last three years, this partnership has been effective for both counties. Eagle County has benefitted from increased staffing in the Roaring Fork Valley, increased knowledge and access to Roaring Fork community programs, and availability of expertise from the Pitkin County Health & Human Services management team. In addition, Eagle County customers who work in Aspen can access public assistance services in Aspen, if needed.”
Eagle and Pitkin County residents in the Roaring Fork Valley can obtain further information about public assistance programs by contacting the Eagle County Health & Human Services offices in El Jebel at 704-2760.
