Aspen, Colorado – July 21, 2011–The City of Aspen is one of a select number of governments across the nation to win the prestigious Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Budget Presentation Award for its 2011 budget.
In order to win the award the City had to meet 27 criteria that fall into four categories the budget must speak to, which include: policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications tool.
This award reflects the City’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. “Given that there are over 17,600 government professionals our association serves, this means Aspen is one of the select few to earn this award,” said John Fishbein, Senior Manager at GFOA. “It takes a lot of effort for a government to put the parameters in place to meet the criteria for this award. It should give citizens comfort in the City’s budgeting process.”
The City of Aspen was one of 1,214 that won the award.
“We are excited to receive this award from GFOA as it shows that our budget document meets the highest standards as it relates to presentation of budgetary information,” said City Finance Director Don Taylor. “Finance staff worked hard to make sure that the budget document serves as an effective policy document and financial plan for the City of Aspen. This award acknowledges that effort.”
Essentially the award means the City got the highest grade possible on its budget document. “It’s like going to the grocery store and looking at toothpaste. If one has been sanctioned by the Dental Association, it gives a degree of comfort to the buyer. It’s the same with this award for the budget,” said Fishbein.
Award recipients like Aspen are pioneering efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and providing an excellent example for other governments throughout the country.
