Open House to Precede P&Z Decision
(Aspen, CO – 9/27/13) The Pitkin County Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to approve the West of Maroon Creek Plan (WOMP) following an open house and public hearing on October 8th. The WOMP is expected to guide development at the Pitkin County Airport, the Airport Business Center, the Buttermilk ski area, the Inn at Aspen and other properties along Highway 82 between the Maroon Creek bridge and the end of the Airport.
The Pitkin County Planning and Zoning Commission has been meeting on a monthly basis since April, 2012 to develop the WOMP. The vision for the WOMP is guided by the culmination of years of citizen work on the Aspen Area Community Plan and subsequent input from the West of Maroon Creek neighborhoods.
“We developed the plan as a direct follow-up to the 2012 Aspen Area Community Plan to help prevent sprawl and retain scenic views along what is being called the ‘gateway to Aspen’,” Sassano said. “Among other things, scenic guidelines in the WOMP provide mechanisms to avoid an urbanized tunnel-like corridor along Highway 82 between the airport and Maroon Creek Bridge.”
“Land use, transportation and scenic quality choices for this area reflect the importance of thoughtful planning in our community,” said Director of Community Development, Cindy Houben. “This plan coordinates the previous entrance to Aspen transportation decisions with future development patterns to ensure an improved experience as we travel the area by bike, car, or as a pedestrian,” Houben said.
The Oct. 8th public open house runs from 5 to 6 pm followed by the public hearing at 6 pm in the Rio Grande meeting room in Aspen.
