Construction begins on Rio Grande Trail

ASPEN – A two-month construction project to create both a paved and a soft-surface stretch of the Rio Grande Trail above Woody Creek began Thursday, July 31.

Contractor Frontier Paving, working with Aspen Earthmoving, will construct a new soft-surface trail extending about 2 miles upvalley from the Rio Grande Trail’s crossing of McLain Flats Road. The existing Rio Grande Trail will then be paved, providing trail users with the option to ride or walk on pavement or on a compacted gravel trail.

Another two miles of the Rio Grande, upvalley from this project, will remain as it is – with only a compacted gravel surface.

Trail users will be detoured onto an adjacent route alongside the Rio Grande Trail as the project proceeds. Directional signs will be in place. Users will encounter construction traffic and may experience brief delays.
